New York City FC were on the road again this weekend as they took on Atlanta United.
Head Coach Pascal Jansen was keen to see his side bounce back from a disappointing defeat to Red Bull New York in their last outing.
With 10 players unavailable, Jansen made several changes to the lineup, including a start for Tomás Romero in place of Matt Freese.
The visitors started brightly and took the lead when Matthew Edwards inadvertently turned Agustín Ojeda’s low cross into his own net.
The lead lasted just five minutes, however, as Atlanta equalized in the 10th minute through Giuliano Galoppo. The midfielder found space at the back post from a corner and tapped the ball home.
New York City FC were handed a great chance to reclaim the lead four minutes later, but Bénie Traoré was unable to keep his effort on target.
Jansen’s side continued to apply pressure, with both Nico Fernández Mercau and Andrés Perea testing Atlanta goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos.
Atlanta responded through Breel Embolo. The Swiss international had found it difficult going against Thiago Martins but managed to draw a save from Romero just before the half-hour mark.
Fernández Mercau then saw two efforts blocked within the space of four minutes before Jonny Shore was denied by a block from Enea Mihaj.
The final chance of the half fell to Atlanta’s Mauricio Amaro in the 40th minute. He attempted to test Romero from distance, but the goalkeeper handled the effort comfortably.
The second half began with half-chances at both ends. First, Galoppo flashed a cross in front of Romero, but none of his teammates were able to get on the end of it.
Then, Nico Cavallo ventured forward and was found in space by Fernández Mercau. Unfortunately, his effort from a narrow angle did not trouble Hoyos.
A goal was not far away, however, and it arrived for New York City FC in the 57th minute through Perea. Inspired by another dangerous low delivery from Ojeda, the midfielder timed his run perfectly and calmly slotted the ball into the net.
Jansen made his first change in the 67th minute, introducing Luighi in place of Traoré.
The visitors almost added a third moments later after Wolf connected with a ball over the top and played it wide to Ojeda.
The Argentine curled a beautiful left-footed effort into the net, but an offside in the buildup denied the winger a memorable goal on his 100th appearance for the Club.
Atlanta were by no means finished, though, and found an equalizer in the 74th minute through Jay Fortune. The midfielder collected a layoff from Tristan Muyumba before firing a low effort past Romero, who could only get a hand to the ball.
Jansen made his second change of the night in the 80th minute, replacing Cavallo with Kevin O’Toole.
New York City FC continued to search for a third goal, but Atlanta refused to surrender the draw. In stoppage time, Raúl Gustavo tried an ambitious effort from range that failed to trouble Romero.
That would be the last chance of the night for New York City FC as they were forced to settle for a point on the road.
