NYCFC II fell to a 4-2 defeat against Inter Miami CF II despite taking an early lead through Joseph Suchecki’s penalty. Miami responded with three first-half goals, but Juan Ponce’s second-half spot kick gave the visitors hope. After Miami were reduced to 10 men, Jude Adeclat restored the hosts’ two-goal advantage in stoppage time, despite late chances for the Boys in Blue.

New York City FC were in the Sunshine State on Tuesday night as they took on Inter Miami CF II.

Matt Pilkington’s side were keen to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to Toronto FC II last time out and made the perfect start against Miami, taking the lead inside the opening 10 minutes.

A strong run in behind from Jacob Arroyave was found with a pass from Seymour Reid. Arroyave did his best to stay on his feet but was felled inside the area, earning NYCFC II a spot kick.

Captain Joseph Suchecki took responsibility for the penalty and calmly dispatched it into the bottom-left corner.

Miami tried to quickly summon a response through Diego Rey. The forward drew a save from Mac Learned in the 13th minute before Nash Dearmin fired wide of the target a minute later.

Unfortunately, an equalizer for the hosts was not far away, as Mateo Saja connected with a low cross from Theo Vorenkamp to fire home in the 16th minute.

The end-to-end start continued through the 20th minute, when Reid crashed a free kick from distance against the woodwork.

Not to be outdone, Zeltzer-Zubida then tested Learned with an effort from inside the area that the goalkeeper held well.

Reid tried to put NYCFC II back in front in the 25th minute before the hosts took a 2-1 lead three minutes later through Vorenkamp.

Once again arriving after a low cross from the right, Vorenkamp was in the box to apply the finishing touch to Rey’s delivery.

NYCFC II almost found an equalizer in the 34th minute from a corner, only for Kevin Pierre’s near-post header to hit the side netting.

Jacob Arroyave then fired over a few minutes later before El Hadji Samb drew a save from Matias Martin.

Miami’s goal was living a charmed life heading into halftime. In the 42nd minute, Joao Loiola hit the woodwork from a corner before Reid’s follow-up was cleared off the line.

Those misses would come back to bite NYCFC II, as Miami claimed a third in first-half stoppage time. Zeltzer-Zubida pounced on the rebound from Rey’s initial shot to put the ball past Learned.

The visitors produced two chances of their own before the halftime whistle, but neither found the net.

Pilkington made one change to start the second half, introducing Drew Kerr in place of Luka Sunjic.

The visitors started the second half brightly and a flick from Arroyave put Reid through on goal.

He could not shake the attention of his marker, however, in order to get a shot away. 

As the clock ticked toward the hour mark, Jonathan Lopez tried his luck from distance but failed to trouble Miami’s goalkeeper.

At the other end, Nash Dearmin and Rey both had efforts at goal for the hosts, but neither troubled Learned.

NYCFC II were handed a route back into the game when they were awarded a second penalty after Reid was felled inside the area.

Between the spot kick being awarded and taken, Pilkington turned to his bench, introducing Juan Ponce in place of El Hadji Samb.

Ponce took responsibility from the spot and hammered the ball past the goalkeeper with his first touch of the game.

Pilkington made two further changes in the 74th minute, introducing David Duque and Niccolo Vafiades in place of Arroyave and Peter Molinari.

The visitors then came within inches of a third goal when Kerr powered a header toward goal, only for Miami’s goalkeeper to brilliantly palm it away.

Miami were reduced to 10 men in the 82nd minute after Urkidi was shown a second yellow card.

NYCFC II went close again when Ponce unleashed a vicious strike from the edge of the area. The goalkeeper got his body behind the effort before turning it behind for a corner.

Pilkington’s final change of the night came just before stoppage time, with Caleb Danquah replacing Adonis Campos.

Despite the visitor’s growing momentum it would be Miami that found the next goal of the game through Jude Adeclat early into stoppage time.  

NYCFC II went close to a third deep into stoppage time when Kerr’s effort was tipped onto the post by Marin. 

Unfortunately, that meant NYCFC II were forced to settle for a 4-2 defeat on the road.
