Match Recap
New York City FC returned to Queens for the second time this week, hosting CF Montréal after a dramatic stoppage-time win over Atlanta United.
Looking to make it back-to-back victories, Head Coach Pascal Jansen made two changes to Wednesday’s lineup. Talles Magno and Jonny Shore came in for the injured Alonso MartĂnez and Aiden O’Neill.
Montréal created the first chance in the 12th minute. Hennadii Synchuk’s shot struck James Sands before Viktor Radojević fired over. Dani Pereira sent a similar effort over the bar nine minutes later.
New York City FC threatened just before the half-hour mark. Nico FernĂ¡ndez Mercau’s free-kick delivery was chested down in the box by AndrĂ©s Perea, who turned and shot but sent his effort over the bar.
Perea made no mistake a little over 10 minutes later. FernĂ¡ndez Mercau intercepted a clearance from MontrĂ©al’s goalkeeper and squared the ball to Perea, who calmly slotted it home to break the deadlock.
New York City made a change at halftime, with Nico Cavallo replacing Kevin O’Toole at fullback.
Both teams started the second half quickly. Synchuk fired just wide of the right post from distance for MontrĂ©al, while Brayan Vera blocked FernĂ¡ndez Mercau’s effort at the other end. Shore then sent a shot over from distance.
In the 57th minute, New York City made three more changes: Hannes Wolf, Raul Gustavo and Luighi replaced Talles Magno, Shore and Traoré.
Wolf nearly doubled the hosts’ lead minutes after coming on. FernĂ¡ndez Mercau laid the ball off to him, but his shot was blocked.
Montréal had a chance to equalize from a free kick when Alexis Sanchez got the ball up and over the wall. Freese reacted well to make the save.
Luighi came close in the 67th minute after winning the ball high up the field and driving toward goal. He tried to curl a shot into the bottom corner, but Samsy Keita parried it away.
Keaton Parks replaced Perea in New York City’s final change of the match in the 70th minute.
Montréal threatened through Wiki Carmona, who wriggled through traffic inside the area and tried to beat Freese from a tight angle. His effort missed the target.
Gustavo had a chance of his own two minutes later. Ojeda whipped in a free kick that found the defender in space, but Gustavo’s header went wide.
Carmona fired a snap shot well wide of Freese’s post in the 86th minute as Montréal continued to search for an equalizer.
The visitors found one in stoppage time. Daniel RĂos guided a deflected cross into the top corner past Freese.
Ojeda tried to find an instant response, but saw a low driven effort held by Keita.Â
Despite a frantic finish, New York City FC couldn’t find a much-needed go-ahead goal and had to settle for a draw. The result brought their playoff hopes to an end.
