New York City FC II secured an emphatic 3-0 victory over Orlando City B at Icahn Stadium on Tuesday morning. New York City FC II were back in action on Tuesday morning as they hosted Orlando City B.
A draw in their last outing had NYCFC II keen to taste victory against Orlando, who themselves were winless in three games.
Those chances were given a heavy boost early on thanks to a fast start from Matt Pilkington’s side.
The hosts came flying out of the blocks against Orlando City B, establishing a two-goal advantage inside the opening 13 minutes.
It was Kevin Pierre who broke the deadlock in the 10th minute after a brilliant low through ball from Máximo Carrizo put Elhadji Samb in behind down the right.
His low cross wasn’t cleared by Orlando, and there to jump on the loose ball was Pierre, who smashed it home.
Carrizo then added his name to the scoresheet three minutes later after a misplaced pass from the goalkeeper landed right at the midfielder’s feet. He made no mistake with the finish, stroking the ball past the despairing Tristan Himes.
Orlando began to settle into the contest as the half progressed, with Justin Hylton sending an effort over the bar in the 24th minute as the visitors searched for a route back into the game.
In the 27th minute, Seymour Reid found space inside the penalty area, but his right-footed effort went narrowly wide of the target.
Orlando threatened again in the 37th minute when Caleb Trombino tried his luck from outside the box, only for Jonathan Lopez to block the effort.
NYCFC II continued to look for opportunities in behind the Orlando backline late in the half, with Reid twice caught offside before Elhadji Samb was flagged on two occasions in the closing minutes.
The hosts began the second half in much the same way they finished the first, with Reid firing off an effort inside the opening minute that was blocked.
That early pressure told, however, in the 51st minute as Carrizo netted his second of the morning. Cooper Flax, fresh off making his first-team debut in Leagues Cup, was the provider, finding Carrizo in space with a pinpoint pass — the midfielder making no mistake with a well-taken finish.
Orlando registered their first opportunity after the restart, with Mac Learned called into action in the 53rd minute to deny Nicolas Bobea Torres.
Reid then narrowly missed the target in the 56th minute for NYCFC II before Cooper Flax fired wide three minutes later.
The hosts continued to apply pressure around the hour mark. Pierre saw an effort blocked before Peter Molinari was denied from the right side of the area.
Pierre's morning came to an end in the 62nd minute as Jonathan Arroyave entered the contest.
Carrizo was keen to take home the match ball and almost secured his hat trick in the 72nd minute, only for his effort to go over.
Pilkington made further changes in the 75th minute as Samb and Ponce were replaced by Luka Sunjic and Dwayne Kerr.
Reid was keen to add his name to the scoresheet and was given the chance in the 79th minute after being played through by Molinari. Unfortunately, Orlando’s goalkeeper stood tall and deflected Reid’s dinked effort behind for a corner.
Pilkington turned to his bench in the 89th minute, introducing David Duque and E. Martin for Cooper Flax and Adonis Campos, respectively.
Orlando mounted one final push in stoppage time, earning a corner in the 91st minute. Clovis Archange connected with a header from the right side of the box, but Learned was equal to it, making the save to preserve his clean sheet.
That confirmed an emphatic 3-0 victory at Icahn Stadium for New York City FC II.
