New York City FC’s Leagues Cup campaign may have concluded, but there is little time to catch their breath.
A return to MLS action this weekend pits them against the Philadelphia Union in what promises to be another fiercely contested encounter.
The previous meeting between the two sides this season ended in New York City FC’s favor thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Tayvon Gray. That result continued a trend of tight games between the teams, and Sunday could follow a similar pattern.
New York City return to league play in a strong position. Currently sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference, victory against Philadelphia would draw them level on points with Chicago in fourth and provide valuable momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
They will have to be at their best to overcome a Philadelphia side enjoying an impressive run of league form. Three consecutive victories against the Red Bulls, Seattle Sounders and Atlanta United have helped propel the Union closer to the playoff line and given them renewed belief.
New York City are also unbeaten in three MLS games, although a draw last time out against Toronto FC is something they will be eager to follow with three points at home.
With both teams carrying momentum and plenty still at stake in the Eastern Conference, expect a hard-fought encounter between two sides that rarely give each other an inch.
The Dugout
One of the most notable changes for Philadelphia since the two sides last met has come in the dugout.
Bradley Carnell departed as head coach in late May, with Ryan Richter taking charge on an interim basis. The 37-year-old knows the club well. Richter spent time with the Union as a player before moving into coaching following his retirement in 2017, serving in several different roles within the organization.
During his six games in charge, Richter has maintained a consistent tactical approach. A 4-4-2 with two holding midfielders, sometimes referred to as an “empty bucket,” has been his preferred system, continuing a shape that has been central to Philadelphia’s tactical identity in recent seasons.
The Union are comfortable playing without long spells of possession. Instead, their shape allows them to remain compact, compete aggressively for second balls and quickly attack the space left behind when possession changes hands.
That transition threat will be particularly important for New York City to manage. Patience in possession will be required, but so too will discipline when attacks break down. Philadelphia have the ability to turn a turnover into an opportunity quickly, meaning New York City’s rest defense and counter press could prove crucial Sunday.

Sunday represents New York City FC’s final home game before a run of three consecutive matches on the road.
That makes the visit of Philadelphia an important opportunity to pick up three points before New York City embark on a stretch away from home.
Home form has often provided an important foundation for New York City, and with the Eastern Conference standings still tightly contested, maximizing opportunities in front of their own supporters takes on added significance at this stage of the season.
A victory would not only strengthen their position in the playoff picture, but also allow them to head into that three-game road swing with momentum.
Before attention turns to those challenges, however, New York City will be determined to make the most of one final home assignment and give their supporters something to celebrate Sunday.
